Tips for Good Living

Exterminate roaches DIY fast when you need to

Roaches are ugly and filthy. They may intrude into your property unfortunately even if you keep your house clean. Once they start inhabiting in the house, they multiply fast. They are very strong bugs having the ability to survive with very little amount of foods.

There are exterminating materials available in stores. Unfortunately, they often have bad smells and worse they may work only imperfectly. If you hire a professional exterminator, they may spray toxic chemicals that remain in the house for a long time, and their services are not cheap.

Here is what you can do DIY with a very little expense. Buy a can of ortho boric acid and a bottle of morasses. Both are inexpensive. And you need only a very small amount of each for one application.

a. Put together 4 Table spoons of ortho boric acid and 1 Table spoon of morasses in a plastic (disposable) cup. Using a wood spatula or flat piece of wood, mix them well until a smooth paste is formed.

b. Cut a piece of coagulated board 6 inch long and 2 inch wide. Fold the piece at an equal length in the longitude direction, and make a triangular prism.

c. Put a small amount (1/4 teaspoonful) of morasses-boric acid mixture at the inside center of the prism.

d. Close the open end by a piece of scotch tape or masking tape (or staple).

e. Make several prisms with the mixture.

f. Place the prisms where roaches are seen passing by, like the floor near refrigerator, kitchen stove, under the sink of bathroom, hallway, etc. Make sure the bottom side of the prism is on the floor.

In a few days, you sill see dead bodies of roaches in the house. And in about a week, you will cease to see roaches.

It is important to keep the prisms placed for 2~3 months, because the eggs laid will hatch and new roaches will emerge even after adult roaches die in a few days.

Explanations: Ortho boric acid has been sold as roach exterminating material. However, it is not effective by itself, because roaches do not eat ortho boric acid in the powder form.

However, when mixed with morasses, the smell of morasses attracts roaches, and roaches eat the mix because it is sweet. Once they eat the ortho boric acid they die shortly after.

The present method has been applied by a number of people, most of them are landlords, who receive complaints from the tenants about the infestation of roaches. All the landlords reported that hey were successful.

Caution: Boric acid is only mildly toxic to human, yet, do not return the cups and utensils used for this purpose to the ketchen. It is recommended to use a disposable cup and spoon.
